Australia Sevens history
Of course, let’s not forget that while the party atmosphere is a big part of what makes Rugby 7’s so great, the rugby is the main reason people flock to the rugby stadiums. The Australian Sevens started in 1986 in Sydney before becoming part of the World Rugby Sevens Series in the 1999/2000 season. For three years Brisbane hosted the tournament, then the Adelaide Oval became the home for the next five years, Gold Coast would be the next host of the sevens tournament. Now, ever since 2015/16, Sydney has been the host city for the Australian Sevens. Australia's bitter rugby (and sporting) rivals New Zealand are the most successful team in the tournament, having won the Australia Sevens a record six times.
