Spain National Rugby Union Team
Nicknamed Los Leones (the Lions), Spain's rugby union team are fierce warriors, and one of the most improved nations in European rugby. They may only have qualified for a single World Cup (in 1999), but Los Leones are major competitors in the European Nations Cup, and are great fun to watch. Spain's rugby union team: Essential background
When you think about world rugby, Spain probably isn't the first nation that leaps into your mind. However, the country has a long, proud rugby playing tradition. Their first international was played way back in 1929 (when they beat Italy 9-0) and they have steadily progressed since then.
The team regularly takes part in competitive matches, largely thanks to the European qualification stages of the Rugby World Cup. Every time the tournament approaches, Spain have to fight their way out of a European Pool, and always give a good account of themselves, even if qualification is often out of reach.
If you want to cheer them on as they try to reach the big stage, or you want to attend the European Nations Cup, you may well have a choice of venues. Many Spain matches take place in Valladolid or Barcelona, while the Anoeta Stadium in the Basque Region is also a regular host.
Milestones in Spanish rugby union history
Spain's rugby union trophy cabinet may not be bursting, but Los Leones have been involved in many memorable fixtures. Right from the start, they showed their passion with a 9-0 defeat of Italy, but fans had to wait until the 1980s for similar heroics.
In 1982, Spain almost defeated Argentina (reckoned to be a much stronger side) and also defeated Zimbabwe in Harare in 1984 - which was seen as a major step forward. Strong showings against NZ Maoris, Scotland and England followed, along with a watershed victory over Uruguay.
Since then, the highlight has been 1999's Rugby World Cup qualification. Spain may not have won a match, but were never disgraced, even against South Africa.
